All you need to know about installing a WiFi router

Did you know that when you sign up for a WonderNet fibre to the home internet package, you get a free router and installation? We will provide you with a pre-configured WiFi router and cover the costs of installation and service activation. The router can be directly connected to five devices at once through ports, including laptops, smart TVs, printers, gaming consoles and additional WiFi boosters.

The cabling and router installation will be done through one of our professional partners. Please note that home network integration is not included in WonderNet’s standard installation costs as this can vary in complexity from one household to the next. We do, however, include 30 metres of conduit, the physical fibre optic cable and the installation of the endpoint hardware in the correct area.

What is the endpoint hardware?

This hardware is often referred to as the ONT (Optical Network Terminal) or CPE (Client Premises Equipment). It is a connection device that plugs into the actual fibre optic cable running to your house and joins to the WiFi router. The ONT is a small white plastic box that is glued to the interior wall of your home, near where the WiFi router sits.

The technician doing the installation needs to know where you’d like the ONT and router to be situated. They can advise you on the best route to take, but here are some pointers for your ONT and WiFi router pairing:

  • Place both devices near an electrical outlet.
  • Place them near the room where you use the internet the most, or in a central location that gives good coverage throughout the house.
  • The WiFi router should be near devices that require strong data signals, such as smart TVs and gaming consoles.
  • These devices should ideally be connected directly to your router via an Ethernet cable.
  • Keep your WiFi router away from interfering devices, such as microwaves, powerful bluetooth speakers and the neighbour’s router.

After the router is installed

Once the fibre cable is connected to the ONT and the WiFi router, WonderNet will activate your home internet. You will receive a confirmation message and the service will be handed over to you. You will then need to set up the WiFi on the rest of your devices, such as smartphones and laptops by setting up the WiFi name and using the password assigned to you.

WonderNet technicians are on-hand to help you through this process, should you need assistance. Simply contact our sales team by calling them on 087 828 0000 or emailing them at sales@wondernet.co.za. They will be happy to arrange for a technician to help you. Please note, however, that this service will be charged separately. For more information about our fibre to the home, please contact us today.
